Santa Bárbara Castle: see Alicante from above
From the fortress, the city becomes a map you can read together. Explore its enclosures at an easy pace, pick out landmarks around the bay and talk about what the walls were built to do.
Before you go
Who is it for?
Our idea: little explorers of walls and maps. The enclosures are at different heights; choose a few viewpoints and use the lift if walking up would use up everyone’s energy.
Planning your budget
Castle admission is free. The general lift fare is €2.70; the shuttle costs €1.45 each way. Booked experiences and activities cost extra.
Booking
Alicante Tourism recommends buying lift tickets in advance through its official link. Organised groups have a specific procedure requiring at least 48 hours.
When to go
Opens at 10:00; closes at 18:00 in winter, 20:00 in spring and autumn, and 23:00 in summer. Last entry is 40 minutes before closing. Public holidays, events and weather can affect opening.
Getting there and accessibility
The lift entrance is on Avenida Juan Bautista Lafora, opposite Postiguet beach. It avoids the climb up the hill, but there are still changes in level within the castle. Parking inside the grounds is not allowed.
What makes this place special
- The castle stands on the 166-metre summit of Benacantil: the view helps explain its defensive position.
- There are three enclosures at different heights and from different periods; not everything you see was built at the same time.
- The panoramas help you recognise the bay and connect your visit with a walk through the city afterwards.
A way to enjoy the visit
1–2 hours · editorial estimate, including stops
Route, duration and games suggested by Familybond; this is not a guided tour or an activity organised by the venue.
Decide how to get up
Choose your way up before leaving: walking and taking the lift involve very different effort. Check whether the lift is running, its price and conditions.
Explore without trying to see every room
Choose two or three places in the open enclosures. At each one, ask what you can see and why that view would help defend the castle.
Read the landscape
Finish at an authorised viewpoint. Look for the port and coastline, keeping behind the safety barriers.
A game to take with you
A little observation challenge: find the sea, the port and a recognisable building. Afterwards, draw your own map from memory.
Ready for your day out
- There are changes in level and areas exposed to the sun: let the least confident walker set the pace.
- Do not climb walls or enter closed areas.
- In wind, rain or weather alerts, check for closures before going up.
